Gardenia jasminoides, commonly called common gardenia or cape jasmine, is native to southern China and Japan and is an evergreen shrub with thick, glossy, dark green leaves (to 4” long). It typically grows to 3-6′ tall. Gardenias usually perform best in full sun but may appreciate shade during the hottest part of the day in the warmest parts of their hardiness range. They seem to grow best in humid areas and don’t tolerate drought or arid conditions well. Primarily found outdoors in the south and grown for their fragrant flowers and handsome foliage, gardenias (Gardenia augusta/Gardenia jasminoides) are popular ornamental shrubs, which are known for their finicky needs. In fact, in some areas, gardenias require considerable maintenance. Depending on the climate and growing conditions, some gardenia plants act like an annual. Gardenias are flowering evergreen shrubs hardy in zones 7-11. Their long lasting, fragrant white flowers bloom from late spring to fall. Each bloom can last several weeks before wilting.
